Who's up for Yosemite camping and a hike up to the top of Half Dome, and then hiking the second day to the top of Cloud's Rest?!

Half Dome is one of the most popular hikes in North America. The path we will take is 15.5 miles, ~10 hours, up 4737 feet of elevation change to the top of Half Dome.

Last year we had an amazingly fun trip thanks to all of you crazy barunners! Let's do it again! I couldn't get signature tent cabins in June, but did score 8 cabins at the end of May (nights of the 27th and 28th). Curry Village and the signature tent cabins worked really well last Sept., so I figured we'd do them again.

The dates for the trip are May 27-29. This will require Fri. May 28th to be a vacation day, and some of you may choose to take a half day on Thursday to drive up earlier. I've chosen these dates based on availability and on the best time to see waterfalls at Yosemite. Here's a photo of Yosemite Falls taken last year on May 25th:

Tent cabins can hold up to 4 people and cost $148 per night. With 4 people per tent and a two night stay, that comes out to $74/person after tax for two nights of lodging. They increased the prices from last year, and everyone is also required to get a permit to hike the cables, thanks to a new law passed in 2010.

If you want to be added to the 'Yes' list, you need to pay with a personal check first. Also, the rate listed is only for people who have 4 to a cabin. So please add yourself to the wait list, find your cabin mates, and pay one cabin at a time if possible. If not, I will assist in pairing roommates the best I can. Keep in mind that the quicker your group of 4 is paid, the quicker you'll secure the $74 rate, and the limited spots available. Last year this event filled very quickly, so if you're interested, do not procrastinate!

I booked 8 cabins (max of 32 people). Each cabin has one double bed and two singles. I will be asking for those willing to share a double bed to please do so.

Basic Trip Details:
Drive to Yosemite from the South Bay on Thursday May 27th (~4 hour drive w/o traffic) to arrive sometime before bedtime. Stay at Curry Village in tent cabins Thursday night. Start the hike at 5:30am on Friday May 28th. Complete the hike, and come back to relax, replenish, and socialize at the base camp Friday night. We will camp a 2nd night (because you will be tired!) and Saturday we will do an optional second expedition to the top of Cloud's Rest. This is about the same duration/difficulty as Half Dome, and cabin's weren't available for Sat. night, so we'll be driving home straight after. Others not joining the Cloud's Rest hike will be on their own to hang out, see more of the park, and/or drive home.

Payment:
Payment will be $74/person. I have changed the payment form to PERSONAL CHECK (or cash) since Paypal is tied to Kanishk's account . I will send an e-mail with my home address and would ask to have people mail me a check or hand deliver a check or cash. Thanks :)

Suggested Items to bring (list in progress):
1) Camelback (water bladder) with a few water bottles OR a water filter with two water bottles and a 2+ liter fold up bladder. 1 gallon (3.8L) should be enough water. Make sure water filters protect against Giardia.
2) Gloves (bike gloves or gardener gloves) for the cables at the top.
3) Hiking boots or trail shoes. You'll want solid gripping shoes and possible ankle support depending on the person.
4) Food. One suggested amount for a larger guy is 7 power bars, trail mix, and life savers. Bring enough of whatever you like to keep from "bonking".
5) Backpack, waist pack, or Camelback pack to carry your food/water/gloves/socks/etc.
6) Non-cotton socks
7) Polyester long sleeved shirt (no cotton!)
8) Comfy athletic shorts or nylon pants with pockets.

Other notes:
-It's $20/car to get into the park

Training hikes:
TBD

P.S. Sorry for the rules on sign ups about paying first. Last year I had problems with people dropping right near the event when I had already personally prepaid their cabins.

Just found out about this hike this morning. Good to rescheule for the safety of the group. Too unseasonably cold and uncomfortable this time of year. I'll wear my loafers for this casual hike up to the top. Should be a great repeat of last year.

I missed the call for a vote, but I would've voted to reschedule. August works for me! Please reschedule, and I'll look forward to warm, sunny weather in Yosemite come August!!

I have to check on August, but I think it works. I am down for crap weather, but I have to remind myself that this is the running meetup, not the mountaineering meetup.

It turns out that I have bronchitis, so I was going to probably cancel anyway! Alas, though, I have to sing for a wedding the weekend of August 27th, so Dane, is it possible to get a refund on the money?

Okay everyone, it sounds like a consensus. I agree that having snow at 6000 feet while hiking in the 8000-10000 range sounds cold, wet, and dangerous. I've canceled the reservation for next weekend and have already reserved the next available weekend date for 8 signature tent cabins, which is a stay for the nights of Aug. 27/28. That's a Fri/Sat night combo, so it does not technically require any time off. Upon request, I will refund the trip money for those of you who do not want to go then.

I vote for canceling too. Being sunny, dry and very cold is OK for hiking. But, cold, wet and rainy would not be an ideal condition to hike in. It would be hard to imagine spending two days in these tiny cold cabins, if the conditions are too bad for hiking.

Ok, after listening to you reasonable people I think re-scheduling is the right thing to do. Good point Vicki "how cold those tent cabins will get at night"...

Alright. I discussed with Kristin AFTER I had already said 'sure..I"m game'...and she would like to reschedule as well...so we will give up our two spots for someone else. I would prefer better weather as well, was just looking forward to it...so take us off the list!

Whew, I was beginning to think I was the only wimp (thanks Kyla and Angela). My preference is also to reschedule, I would prefer hiking in nicer weather - and I hate to think how cold those tent cabins will get at night. I'd likely give up my spot to someone else if you guys decide to go, I don't think I'll be a "happy camper" in that weather.

After living in CA for the last year I have grown a little soft so I'm going to agree with Kyla on this one. While seeing snow on Yosemite does sound like a treat, I would rather have it NOT be snowing/sleeting/raining and 25 degrees while I am viewing it :) (I checked the weather for that weekend too) I would vote for a reschedule but I'll suck it up (because I probably won't have much of a choice) if you all still decide to go. I'll just complain about how cold I am the whole time. jk. (kinda)

Michael and I prefer to reschedule to a different date, but will go if everyone else does (& play games in the tent??). It's supposed to be cold and raining (snow @ highest elevations over 6,000ft), all wknd according to the 3 forecasts I looked at. We think it would be uncomfortable and dangerous to hike. The cables aren't up b/c it's too dangerous for park employees to get in there. We will receive refunds for the permits we purchased. Let's go south to a warm climate instead! :) Just our 2c..

    Options are:
    1) To bundle up in warm clothes and continue as planned.
    2) Re-schedule to a different date.
    3) Request a refund

Many of us have requested days off already (including me) so if we're making changes it would just mean a really long Memorial Day weekend :)

If we're changing plans it must be done by 8pm TONIGHT! Otherwise there's a cancellation penalty. So don't delay on feedback!

Hey everyone, the weather for next weekend is pretty cold. The high/low according to weather.com for Thurs./Fri./Sat. is 28/47, 29/49, and 32/52 with possible rain. It has been snowing there and still has good snow pack. Today is the last day to cancel the reservation and reschedule without penalty. PLEASE GIVE ME THOUGHTS ON WHETHER YOU'RE INTERESTED IN RESCHEDULING FOR BETTER WEATHER. I called and the next weekend dates available for 8 tent cabins is Aug. 27/28 (Fri/Sat) or Sept 10/11.
